Hello Gardeners!
We are so pleased to announce the Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society’s (FFHS) program with local youth has been awarded a $500 grant from Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group’s SeedIt Program! The FFHS and youth from Langton P.S. and Fenelon Falls S.S. were busy planting seeds in early spring and now have their food plants in the ground all for our local food banks.
FFHS members, Carol Milroy, Jamie Milroy and Judy Kennedy have taken the lead in coordinating with Fenelon youth and food plants are growing fast!
The youth have 6 garden plots at Langton Public School and 7 more gardens which were donated to the youth by St. James Anglican Church’s Community Garden and church members. The FFHS have another expansive food bank garden at Maryboro Lodge (Fenelon Museum) which has been supported by the youth for several years.
All food grown in these gardens goes directly to the food bank and the gardens are tended to by the Langton Green Team members and the Langton Pals program, FFSS’s Pal program and Eco Club with guidance from FFHS members. These dedicated students have volunteered to help with caring for the gardens during the spring and summer months while following all Covid protocols.
We recently had an outdoor meeting at St. James Community Garden with a few of the volunteer students to gather their input as to the best way to use this grant money. The youth were very enthusiastic and their focus seemed to be on bringing even more opportunities for the local community to get involved in growing their own food, as well as contributing to the food banks.
We are so thankful and excited for this support from the Commonwell SeedIt program. Not only will it help us provide food for the food bank in the immediate, it will also help the program grow and further foster the relationships between FFHS local schools, churches, businesses and individuals in Fenelon Falls and beyond.
We would also like to recognize and thank the Fenelon Falls’ Home Hardware for their donation of soil for the youth garden project.
Keep growing!!!!!
